5 Rolex watch launches for spring/summer 2021: celebrate the Explorer IIs 50th anniversary, plus

April 2024 · 3 minute read

Rolex presents two versions of the new Explorer, an Oystersteel one and a two-toned yellow Rolesor gold reference. This new rendition nods to the 1953 design, which sees the case being sized down to its original 36mm. Applied on the black dial are the 3, 6 and 9 numerals that, along with the indices and hands, are optimised with Chromalight to enhance visibility. Created for exploration and adventures, the watch is waterproof to 100 metres and fitted with a twinlock winding crown to double down on its waterproofing capabilities.

Explorer II

Celebrating its 50th birthday, the Explorer II gets an update while maintaining its iconic silhouette. Still in 42mm, the watch is presented in a white or black dial with Chromalight applied to its indices and hands for a brighter, more legible display; the Chromalight brings a bright blue glow to the dial. The case and bezel maintains its brushed Oystersteel finish, and the watch is now fitted with the new Oyster bracelet complete with an Oysterlock folding clasp and Easylink for quick adjustments. The orange hand circles around the fixed 24-hour bezel to indicate a second time zone.

Cosmograph Daytona

Rolex introduces three Daytona references featuring meteorite dials. The trio includes a white gold version with Cerachrom bezel, plus a yellow gold and an Everose gold bracelet version. The timepiece remains unchanged overall; the Oyster bracelets and Oysterflex rubber strap are still found in theses references, and the piece retains its 40mm case.

The meteorite dial, however, brings a wholly different look to the watch. The black chronograph subdials provide a striking visual contrast to the silvery grey meteorite.

Day-Date 36

The Day-Date 36 gets three colourful transformations all featuring enamel hour-markers, matching leather straps and a full diamond pave dial and case. The orange indices are paired with a yellow gold case, while the turquoise and burgundy references are in white gold and Everose gold respectively.

The watch is fitted with the Calibre 3255, an automatic movement with 70 hours of power reserve – the standard for this model since 2019.

Datejust

Rolex choose the Lady-Datejust as the canvas for its full pave watch this year. The 28mm case, dial and bracelet are covered entirely in diamonds.

The Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 also takes on two other new faces, a new dial pattern and an artistic palm motif number.

The Datejust 36 with a decorative palm dial is paired with an Oystersteel oyster bracelet. The motif is also presented in gold or silver across the dial in its Jubilee bracelet references.

Rolex’s signature fluted bezel inspires the dial design of a new two-toned Roselor reference in 36mm. Contrasting finishing is applied on the dial to create a pattern that evokes the edges and facets of a watch’s yellow gold bezel. A two-toned Jubilee bracelet completes the piece.
